The Sulkava Rowing Race offers a unique experience that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. Set in the heart of the Finnish Lake District, you will row past rocky shores and through narrow straits. It is a place where the joy of rowing together meets the thrill of your own personal achievement. Rowing in these surroundings is more than just a sport – it is a journey into the nature and the soul of the Savo region.
Choose Your Rowing Challenge
Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced rower, you will find a route that suits you. We offer different ways to experience the legendary waters of Lake Saimaa:
- The King’s Route (60 km): Our main event around the entire Partalansaari island. Choose between the Daytime Row or the atmospheric Evening Row on Friday.
- Two-Day Adventure Row (70 km): If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you can complete the challenge as a scenic two-day trip with an overnight stay.
- Experience Routes (15, 25 or 35 km): The experience routes provide shorter options that are perfect also for beginners. With routes of 15, 25, and 35 kilometers, you can enjoy a lighter yet immersive rowing experience, taking in the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Saimaa and the heart of Savonia – all while embracing the festive spirit of the event.
Lake Saimaa is Finland’s largest and most beautiful lake. Its unique nature and stunning archipelago captivate every visitor. While rowing on our routes, keep your eyes open—it is not uncommon to spot the rare Saimaa ringed seal resting on the rocks!
Route descriptions
15 km – Kervilänvirta Route: Our shortest route, perfect for beginners or a quick taste of the Sulkava spirit. The route takes you through beautiful, sheltered waters.
For whom: Perfect for beginners, families, or those trying a Church Boat for the first time.
25 km – Säviönsaari Circuit: A great middle-distance option to enjoy the famous Saimaa views without a full day of rowing. A perfect mid-distance route that combines rugged rocky shores with the famous Pajasalmi bridge challenge
Note: This is also the Finnish Junior Championship distance race.
35 km – Vekaransalmi Archipelago Route: A strong choice for rowers who want to test their endurance before moving up to the full 60 km route.
Highlight: Rowing under the grand Vekaransalmi bridge and navigating the excitingSalmenkorva sound.
60 km – The King’s Route: The ultimate Sulkava challenge. Circling the entire Partalansaari island is a true test of strength and teamwork. This route is challenging, but the stunning landscapes, experiences, and challenges it offers will definitely reward you!
Good to know: The route demands teamwork, pacing, and mental resilience.
70 km Two-Day Adventure Row: The best way to see it all without the rush. This includes the 70 km Route divided over two days. This way, you can enjoy the tranquility of nature and the beauty of Lake Saimaa in all its splendor.
Highlight: Including an overnight stay at Varviranta under the glowing midnight sun.
